25 years of the Mine Ban Treaty (Ottawa Convention) – successes, challenges and innovations
December 1st 2022 saw the event: For a mine-free world: 25 years of the Mine Ban Treaty (Ottawa Convention) – successes, challenges and innovations, organized by the Federal Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany & Handicap International.
It was also an online event.
Among the panellists of the expert roundtable: Successes and challenges on the path to a mine-free world were Firoz Alizada, Victim Assistance Officer for the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention Implementation Support Unit, Margaret Arach Orech, President of the Uganda Landmine Survivors Organisation and Ambassador of International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL), Dr Perrine Benoist, Technical Director of the Mine Action Department, Handicap International (HI) Ilene Cohn, Director of UNMAS, United Nations Mine Action Service Thomas Gebauer, publicist, co-founder of ICBL, Ambassador Thomas Göbel, Permanent Representative of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Conference on Disarmament, Geneva, President of the 21st Meeting of the States Parties to the Ottawa Convention Chair.
Presentation on an artificial minefield (detection and clearance of explosive ordnance) was delivered by Gary Toombs, HI Land Release Specialist.
Innovation in demining – the use of drones, was presented by Xavier Depreytere, HI-Project Manager Innovation.
The production of a prosthesis with a 3D printer was demonstrated during the event.
