Commencement of works according to cluster munitions clearance project of "Niš Airport - 5th phase" site
On the 21st May 2021, with the introduction of contractor "Millennium Team" Ltd., Belgrade, into works, commenced the implementation of cluster munitions clearance project from the Niš Airport - 5th phase site, City of Niš, area totaling 84,750 sqm.
The project was made at the request of Airports of Serbia Ltd., Niš, considering the planned construction works in the territory of the airport complex and the need to create conditions for safe execution of these works. This project will also cover a part of contaminated area of the airport complex under the jurisdiction of the Serbian Army.
The project is funded through the Program of Assistance of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Serbia in the field of humanitarian demining, based on the Agreement on Cooperation between Serbian Mine Action Centre and International Civil Defense Organization (ICDO) for the period 2019-2022, which stipulates the provision of the assistance of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Serbia in this area through the International Civil Defense Organization.
Clearance of this location will eliminate the danger posed by unexploded cluster munitions and will enable regular maintenance and construction works. This will give a full contribution to air traffic safety and further development of the civil airport in Niš.
In addition to this project, and based on the Agreement on Cooperation between SMAC and ICDO, in 2021, 4 more projects will be implemented for clearance of explosive remnants of war from the area around the improvised military depot near Vranje, which was built to accommodate various types of explosive weapons and in which the explosion occurred.
